Covid-19 Race Day Safety Protocols

2020 BCS Marathon + Half Marathon Covid-19 Safety Protocols

  • In order to keep runners and their families socially distant, we will not have an in-person packet pick-up or Runner Expo. Packets with participant shirt, tagged bib, and safety mask will be mailed to each runner approximately one week before the event. This eliminates 8,000-10,000 people interacting in an indoor space in an 8-hour period on the day preceding the event.
  • All volunteers both on the course and at the start and finish lines on race day will be masked and gloved and abide by CDC safety protocols.
  • Instead of a single start time, we will utilize a rolling start lasting approximately 60 minutes. This will allow ~500 people to start the race every 10 minutes at a rate of six socially distanced runners starting together (but six feet apart) every 10 seconds. We will have socially distanced spots marked to stand and will use the entire width of the street to keep runners separated.
  • From the time runners leave their vehicles, they will wear the disposable masks provided in their packets. They will be worn until approximately the ½ mile mark of the race where trashcans will line the streets for runners to properly dispose of their masks before continuing on.
  • Touchless Aid Stations
    • Individual bottles of water and Gatorade will be placed on tables at each aid station. Runners will grab their own bottle and carry it with them until they have finished drinking and can safely throw it away using the provided trashcans along the route.
  • 3-4 volunteers will be at each aid station to re-supply and clean up. They will be masked and gloved, pre-screened, and have temperatures taken immediately before event. They will not be within 6 feet of each other or any runner.
  • Medical stations will be at miles 5, 9, 13, 17, 21 and the finish line.
  • The last ~100 yards to the finish will have barricades to begin dividing runners into several finishing lanes well before the finish line.
  • Upon crossing the finish line, runners will be handed a swag bag with an additional disposable mask, finisher medal, finisher’s jacket, water, Gatorade, and pre-packaged food. They will immediately be directed to the parking lot and asked to wear their masks until they reach their vehicle.
  • NO spectators will be allowed at the Start line or the Finish line.
